Care with pets in hot weather

January 29, 2009 – 6:06 am

Just a quick note to those of who who provide dog walking services as well as pet sitting. Please be aware of the dangers that dogs face in the current weather we are experiencing. Dogs need to inhale air cooler than their normal body temperature of 102F degrees (38.8C). In fact, even 80F degree air (26.6C) temperatures can be dangerous. Heat stroke is a dire emergency and one from which many pets do not recover. And you’d be shocked to find out just how fast it can occur. It’s probably best if you arrange with the owner in advance and agree that on days where the temperature is for example 30C or more that you won’t walk the dogs on those days. If owners are at work, some owners will probably still want you to call round anyway for playtimes and to top up water etc.
If anyone has any tips that they’d like to share with regards to keeping pets cool in hot weather, then just drop us a line and we’ll publish your tips on the blog.
